Industrial Visit by Dronacharya College of Engineering

On 3rd March 2015, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Mr. Amar Saraswat, organized an industrial visit to my institute, Sherlock Institute of Forensic Science. It is a leading independent private forensic science lab registered with the Government of India (MCA, Govt. of India), which provides several forensic investigation services.

He was accompanied by twenty students from the IV and VI semesters. The primary aim of this visit was to equip students with knowledge about cyber forensics and image processing techniques.

The session started with explaining the importance of image processing, forensic science, protection of crime scenes, securing and isolating the crime scenes, and different types of evidence found on a crime scene by Ms. Sikshita, a cybercrime expert.

She explained how to differentiate between the actual and morphed images using the image processing technique and demonstrated how to recover data items and which tools are required.

After that, I covered various domains of image forensics, such as evidence analysis, fingerprint analysis, and handwriting analysis.

I also discussed technical challenges associated with automatic indexing and retrieval of scanned documents. Further I talked about Cursive Recognition Approaches such as document pre-processing, which consists of noise removal, word box extraction, size normalization, holistic matching, featured extraction, and thinning.

After that, I showed how to practically obtain fingerprints by taking the fingerprints of one of the students.

I demonstrated various fingerprint levels with those fingerprints and explained the types of arches, loops, exemplar fingerprints, and latent fingerprints. I also covered several topics like cyber crimes, cyber forensics, and cyber threat preventive measures.

The interactive session was concluded by solving students’ queries and discussing various career options available in cyber forensics and image processing fields. I also stressed the importance of doing research in these fields and related areas.

The industrial visit proved highly beneficial to students as they learned about image processing tools, mobile forensic investigation, voice identification, and the future scope of these fields.
