Expert Talk: Organized Corporate Crime

The role of forensics has diversified over the years, and with advancements in technology, the corporate sector too is prone to several crimes.

The Department of Forensic Science, Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, organized a National Conference on Recent Trends and Advancements in Forensic Science from March 16–18, 2023.

The event marked the presence of several forensic experts from different domains to discuss the recent challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the Criminal Justice System across the country.

As a forensic expert and entrepreneur, I was invited to share my thoughts on the topic:

Uncovering Misconduct: Forensic Investigation Challenges and Solutions in the Protection of Organised Corporate Crime

Corporate crime has increased manifolds with digitalization, and with remote work cultures flourishing everywhere, the challenges organizations face to combat them cannot be ignored. The crimes can be in any form, like fraud, embezzlement, bribery, data breaches, insurance frauds, insider trading, etc.

These can be committed by an individual or group of individuals and can have an adverse effect on the company’s market reputation and assets.

I addressed these challenges and discussed how, by implementing strategies and solutions, organisations can minimize the occurrence of such threats.

However, no security measure can eliminate the possibility of the occurrence of such threats.

So it is necessary for a company to be ready with a backup plan if any crime occurs to minimize its ill effect on their reputation and financial status. They should also conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential vulnerabilities and implement the necessary measures to protect against them.

Though forensic investigation is possible for such crimes, several times, due to a lack of proper evidence, it is not possible to convict the suspect. Constant research is going on to invent new forensic investigation techniques to keep up with the methods criminals nowadays use to commit crimes.

In conclusion, I discussed that the best way to reduce corporate crimes is by implementing strong security protocols, conducting training and awareness programs for their employees, and working in close collaboration with law enforcement agencies. By taking these challenges into consideration, organizations can protect their assets and reputation, and ensure the integrity of their operations.

The lecture was followed by an oral paper presentation, and all the participants were at their creative best.

A wholehearted thanks to the organizing board and Prof. Mukesh Kumar Thakkar sir and Prof. Rajinder Singh Chandel sir for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts and expertise with fellow experts and budding forensic enthusiasts.
